Menopause also known as "the change" refers to the time when menstrual cycles have ceased for one year. Many women move through the menopausal transition without a great deal of distress. Some women however, do have a number if significant symptoms and require treatment to maintain their quality of life. Hot flashes, night seats and vaginal dryness are clearly tied to the menopause. Sleep disturbance is another common complaint. Evidence for a link between mood disturbances, problems with memory and urinary incontinence has not been proven.
There is a growing interest in bioidentical or "natural" hormones for menopausal symptoms. Our physicians are pleased to discuss this treatment option.
Individualizing care is essential. As some treatment options are known to be associated with serious risks and the safely of other treatments are unknown, discussions with a doctor in a relaxed setting is important.
